Egypt declares state of emergency after church attacks

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has announced a three-month state of emergency after attacks on two Coptic churches that left at least 44 dead. The BBC reports that the measure allows authorities to make arrests without warrants and search people’s homes. It needs to be approved by parliament before it is implemented. The so-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the blasts in Tanta and Alexandria on Palm Sunday. The group has targeted Copts in Egypt recently and warned of more attacks. Mr. Sisi made a defiant speech at the presidential palace after a meeting of the national defence council to discuss the explosions. He warned that the war against the jihadists would be “long and painful” and said that the state of emergency would come into force after all “legal and constitution steps” were taken. Egyptian Christians wept with rage on Monday as they recovered the bodies of loved ones killed in twin church bombings, furious at a state they believe will no longer protect them from neighbors bent on their murder. Forty-four people were killed in the attacks on Palm Sunday, a joyous festival a week before Easter when Christians celebrate the triumphant arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem. At Tanta University hospital morgue, desperate families were trying to get inside to search for loved ones. Security forces held them back to stop overcrowding, enraging the crowd. “Why are you preventing us from entering now? Where were you when all this happened?” shouted one women looking for a relative. Some appeared in total shock, their faces pale and unmoving. Others wept openly as women wailed in mourning. ‘Paddy rice price may drop to N6000’

THE price of paddy rice may drop to N6000 in the next six months., the President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) , Alhaji Aminu Goronyo, has said Goronyo, who dropped the hint at the weekend, said in some northern states, paddies now go for as low as N10,000, adding that the demand and consumption of locally produced rice have increased tremendously in recent time, just as farmers are smiling to the bank due to the patronage they are enjoying. He said there is increased productivity as more northerners were keying into the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) Anchor Borrowers Programme to start rice farming in earnest. 221 policemen watch over Wike, says IG

Police chief Ibrahim Idris has denied that he ordered the killing of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. The police yesterday described the report as “false” and “misleading”. In an interview, the governor claimed that the Inspector-General had ordered the state’s Commissioner of Police to kill him. In a statement yesterday, Force spokesman Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said Wike’s claim was unbecoming of a governor. He said that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure security of lives, including that of the governor. The statement noted that 221 police personnel were recently deployed in Rivers to watch over the governor. Militants kill eight in Lagos

Eight persons were killed yesterday in a Lagos community where gunmen suspected to be militants and hoodlums struck. Many were injured. In the militants’ raid on Ishawo, a settlement on the outskirts of Ikorodu, four policemen, a soldier and one civilian were reportedly killed. Besides, two persons were killed in attacks by suspected cult members on Otodo Gbame community in Lekki. The militants reportedly ambushed the policemen attached to Owutu Division on their way back from a field operation. It was learnt that the security operatives had gone to rescue four civilians kidnapped by the gunmen and were being forced into the creeks. After rescuing the victims, the team was said to have boarded their Hilux patrol van and headed back to the station.
